Water Quality

Performance in Drinking Water Quality and Program Compliance is part of our Annual Performance Plan, which provides for at-risk cash compensation to be paid to American Water employees upon the achievement of stated short-term annual business objectives.

Our performance in Drinking Water Program Compliance is measured by counting the overall number of drinking water notices of violation, or NOVs, received by the Company in accordance with internally established procedures.

Our performance in Drinking Water Quality is measured by counting the overall number of drinking water NOVs for maximum contaminant level exceedances received by the Company in accordance with internally established procedures.

Both metrics may exclude NOVs related to newly acquired systems and associated with third-party violations, among others.

Water Use & Efficiency

By 2035, meet customer needs while saving 15% in water delivered per customer compared to a 2015 baseline.¹

¹Baseline is the 2014/2015 average delivery per customer. New York American Water was excluded from baseline and tracking anticipating divestiture.

Water System Resilience

By 2030, increase water system resiliency to respond to more extreme events by increasing Utility Resilience Index (URI) weighted average by 10% from 2020 baseline.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Science-based and Paris Agreement Aligned

Medium-term: Reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50% by 2035 from a 2020 baseline.

Long-term: Achieve net zero absolute scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2050.
